Free Hindi flashcards for kids and beginners

Hindi Cards is a free set of interactive Hindi alphabet flashcards. It covers the whole varnamala (वर्णमाला): every vowel, every consonant, the vowel signs that join them, and the numerals. Use it to learn to read Devanagari from scratch, to help a child practise their letters, or to brush up before a Hindi class.

What the flash cards cover

  • Swar (vowels): 13 vowels from अ to अः.
  • Vyanjan (consonants): 33 consonants in their traditional families, from क ka to ह ha.
  • Matras: the 9 vowel signs shown on क, like का, कि and कु.
  • Conjuncts: क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र.
  • Nukta letters: 7 borrowed sounds such as ज़ za and फ़ fa.
  • Numerals: Hindi digits ० to ९.

How to use these Hindi flash cards

  1. Pick your letters. Switch on one or two groups, such as the vowels and the Ka family.
  2. Begin the test. A letter appears; type how it sounds, for example “ka” for क. Accents are optional.
  3. Repeat the misses. Correct letters leave the deck. Missed letters keep coming back until you get them right.

Press the space bar to flip a card and see the answer. More detail is in How Hindi Cards works.

For parents and teachers

These Hindi learning cards work well for kids when an adult plays along. Start with the swar group, let your child say each sound out loud, and type the answer for them. Keep rounds short: five minutes a day builds recall faster than a long session once a week. Once a group feels easy, add the next consonant family.

Each tile also works as a Hindi alphabet chart, with every letter and its sound written underneath, so you can use the page for reference before testing.

A good order to learn the Hindi alphabet

  1. Vowels (swar), then the matras that represent them.
  2. Consonants one family at a time: Ka, Cha, Ṭa, Ta, then Pa.
  3. The semivowels य र ल व and the sibilants श ष स ह.
  4. Conjuncts, nukta letters and numerals.

Why this order works is explained in how the Devanagari alphabet is organised, and you can speed things up with these tips for learning Devanagari and this guide to matras.

Frequently asked questions

How many letters are in the Hindi alphabet?
Counts vary slightly between charts, but a typical school varnamala shows 11 to 13 vowels (swar) and 33 core consonants (vyanjan), often followed by the four conjunct letters क्ष, त्र, ज्ञ and श्र. These flashcards include 13 vowels, 33 core consonants and 4 conjuncts, plus vowel signs, nukta letters and numerals.
What is varnamala?
Varnamala (वर्णमाला) means “garland of letters”. It is the name for the ordered Hindi alphabet as it is taught in schools: the vowels first, then the consonants arranged by where each sound is made in the mouth.
What is the difference between swar and vyanjan?
Swar (स्वर) are vowels, sounds that can be spoken on their own, like अ (a) and आ (ā). Vyanjan (व्यंजन) are consonants, which are always paired with a vowel when spoken. Each consonant carries a short “a” by default, so क is read “ka”.
Are these Hindi flashcards free?
Yes. Every letter group is free to use, with no account, no ads between cards and no limits on how many rounds you play.
Can toddlers and preschoolers use them?
Yes, with a grown-up. Young children can say each letter’s sound out loud while a parent types the answer, which turns a round into a quick call-and-response game. Older children who can read English letters can play on their own.
